Within the context of the 2006-388 decree (31 March 2006), which established 10 May as the day to commemorate the memory of the slave trade, slavery and their abolitions, the CSME-SQY organises each year events to commemorate memories of slavery in Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines.

Summary of objectives:

The objectives of the Collectif pour la semaine de la mémoire de l’esclavage de Saint Quentin en Yvelines are as follows:

  • To organize a week of events commemorating memories of slavery in Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines, every year from the 4th to 10th May
  • To keep the memory of the slave trade and slavery alive and prevent it from ever happening again
  • To inform and educate people about the history of the slave trade and black enslavement, and their impact on society today
  • To honour the people (both famous and anonymous) who fought and often sacrificed their lives to make possible the abolition of black slavery
  • To share the legacy of this history through artistic, cultural and literary traditions
  • To explore various ways to move forward, both individually and collectively, without concealing this part of history that lasted for more than three centuries and affected three continents.
