Site overview:
In 2005, the Comité Traite Négrière/Esclavage (CTNE) (Committee Slave Trade/Slavery) rallied and set up a petition which obtained nearly 2,000 signatures, in order to install a plaque in homage to Toussaint Louverture in the city of Grenoble. On the 10th of May 2005, the City Council and the CTNE installed and inaugurated the plaque " Toussaint Louverture " on the Parvis des Droits de l’Homme - Jardin de Ville de Grenoble. The plaque features a portrait of Toussaint and the following inscription: "In striking me down, it is only the trunk of the black people’s freedom tree that they have brought down, it will grow back through the roots because they are deep and numerous. Dominique Toussaint Breda known as Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803). A symbol of the struggle of black slaves for their freedom, equality and the fraternity of all men regardless of their colour" "En me renversant, on n’a abattu que le tronc de l’arbre de la liberté des noirs, il repoussera par les racines parce qu’elles sont profondes et nombreuses. Dominique Toussaint Breda dit Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803). Symbole de la lutte des Esclaves noirs pour leur liberté, l’égalité et la fraternité de tous les Hommes quelle que soit leur couleur"
