The association Mémoria was founded in 2005 in La Rochelle. The president of the association, Josy Roten, is also a member of the Comité National pour la Mémoire et l'Histoire de l'Esclavage (National Committee for the Memory and History of Slavery). In October 2015, the association launched a petition to protest against the fact that the statue of Toussaint Louverture, created by the Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow, had been placed in the courtyard of the Musée du Nouveau Monde, which limits the visibility of the work.
The objectives of Mémoria are as follows:
- To create a memorial to slavery and the slave trade in La Rochelle
- To implement actions aiming to promote the teaching of the history of the slave trade.
