Mémoria's petition

In October 2015, the association Mémoria launched a petition, addressed to the Mayor of La Rochelle, to protest against the fact that the statue of Toussaint Louverture, created by the Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow, had been placed in the enclosed courtyard of an 18th-century shipowner's mansion, now known as the Musée du Nouveau Monde (Museum of the New World) in La Rochelle, which limits the visibility of the work.

The association explained that they 'want the statue of Toussaint Louverture to be positioned in a neutral space, where is it less cut off and more easily accessible, and able to offer an unequivocal statement symbolising the abolition of slavery. By providing direct access to culture and this shared page of history within the city, the statue will encourage an analysis of the mechanisms that brought about human servitude and exploitation, and will curtail the re-emergence of forced labor in contemporary times.' The petition requests that the statue be repostioned and placed in a more accessible space.
