In October 2015, the association Mémoria launched a petition, addressed to the Mayor of La Rochelle, to protest against the fact that the statue of Toussaint Louverture, created by the Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow, had been placed in the enclosed courtyard of an 18th-century shipowner's mansion, now known as the Musée du Nouveau Monde (Museum of the New World) in La Rochelle, which limits the visibility of the work.
