Petition of the CTNE: plaque in memory of Toussaint Louverture (Grenoble)

In 2005, the Comité Traite Négrière/Esclavage (CTNE) rallied and set up a petition which obtained nearly 2,000 signatures, in order to install a plaque in memory of Toussaint Louverture in the city of Grenoble. On the 10th of May 2005, the City Council and the CTNE installed and inaugurated the plaque "Toussaint Louverture" on the Parvis des Droits de l’Homme - Jardin de Ville de Grenoble.

160th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, Walk With Us

On the occasion of 160th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, the Association Relais de Gorée organised a walk from Bordeaux to Nantes via La Rochelle, entitled "Marchez Avec Nous” (Walk with us). This journey through a total of 23 towns linked to the slave trade was to be held from the 28th of April to the 19th of May 2008.

Mémoria's petition

In October 2015, the association Mémoria launched a petition, addressed to the Mayor of La Rochelle, to protest against the fact that the statue of Toussaint Louverture, created by the Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow, had been placed in the enclosed courtyard of an 18th-century shipowner's mansion, now known as the Musée du Nouveau Monde (Museum of the New World) in La Rochelle, which limits the visibility of the work.

Fèt Kaf

The Fèt Kaf takes place in La Réunion on 20th December (a bank holiday since 1983). To commemorate the abolition of slavery, the association Tikaf posts up music and peotry videos online through their YouTube channel.

Guided Tour: "Bordeaux Nègre"

The guided tour 'Bordeaux nègre' (Negro Bordeaux) was designed by Karfa Diallo, a writer and poet from Bordeaux, and president of the association Mémoires et Partages. This alternative touristic tour recalls the slave heritage of the city of Bordeaux with reference to its architecture and history.

L'École des Mémoires

The 'École des Mémoires' ('School of Memories') is a project set up by the association Mémoires et Partages. According to its website, the '"École des Mémoires" aims to respond to the fractured memories caused by the violence of globalisation. The goal of the school is to create a new humanism, or a new kind of consciousness.

Commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery, Collectif des Associations Devoir de Mémoire (CADM)

Every year since 2011, the Collectif des Associations Devoir de Mémoire (CADM) organises a cultural and festive event commemorating the abolition of slavery in Nanterre (a commune located in the department of Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France).
