Site overview:
Designed by Max Relouzat, the President of the Association "Mémoires des Esclavages” (Memories of Slaveries) and sculpted by the Quimper artist Marc Morvan, "Mémoires" (Memories) is a sculpture symbolising the collective memory of slavery. The 10 meters high work consists of two large masks: one is looking towards the European continent, the second faces the direction of the other four continents. According to Max Relouzat, they "represent the universality of the memories of slavery."
The sculpture is installed in the commercial port of Brest and was inaugurated on the 10th of May 2015, in the presence of, among other, the sub-prefect representing the State, Madam the First Deputy Bernadette Abiven representing the Mayor of Brest and President of BMO, many personalities of various political currents and associations such as Gaëlle Abily and Mrs. Anne-Marie Kervern, President of the Fondation Crédit Agricole Finistère, the President of UNESCO Clubs, Mrs. Chapalain for the Diwan schools (federation of Breton-medium schools), as well as many activists including Naïg Le Gars and Tangi Louarn.
The work of steel was erected with the support of the municipality of Brest, near the the Moulin Blanc marina and the Océanopolis, ocean discovery center. The sculpture was completed thanks to a citizen subscription and the support of the city of Brest.
