Historical overview:
The association Mémoires des Esclavages, founded in 2010, aims to commemorate the abolition of slavery each year. Its president, Max Relouzat, created a ten-metre high sculpture in memory of the different forms of slavery, which is installed in the city of Brest. The statue was inaugurated on 10th May 2015. The association has now begun educational work in schools, colleges and high schools around Finistère.
Summary of objectives:
The objectives of the association Mémoires des Esclavages are as follows:
- To create a sculpture 'Memoires' (Memories) dedicated to the victims of all forms of slavery
- To contribute to making 10th May the date for commemorating the slave trade, slavery and their abolitions, according to the Decree of 21st May 2001
- To encourage cultural and historical research related to past and present forms of enslavement.
