The sculpture paying tribute to the slaves who rebelled in Saint-Leu, created by Nelson Boyer, was inaugurated on the 15th of April 2012. This sculpture represents the revolt of Saint-Leu, also called the revolt of Eli, named after its main leader. Slaves rose up from the 5th to the 8th of November 1811. It was the only major slave revolt of La Réunion, and was harshly repressed by the settlers living on the Island.
