A statue in tribute to Victor Shoelcher is located in front of the old courthouse, sculpted by Marquet de Vasselot. The statue was inaugurated in 1904 and represents the abolitionist accompanied by a child. On the pedestal is engraved: "No French territory can hold slaves anymore".
