Site overview:
Previously known as the " Schœlcher House of Fessenheim", closed in 2014, the site was replaced by the museum area entitled " Musée Victor Schœlcher, son oeuvre" (Victor Schœlcher Museum, his lifework) on the 6th of June 2015. Although Schœlcher was born in Paris, his family came from Fessenheim and the museum presents the history of the abolitionist. It also outlines some of the porcelain works produced Schœlcher’s father, Marc Schœlcher. This museum is part of the "Route des Abolitions" (Road of the Abolitions), a network connecting the important sites of the history of the abolition of slavery in France. This international project, supported by the UN, includes five sites in eastern France located on the “road of the abolition of slavery and the Human Rights”, launched in 2004: Anne-Marie Javouhey’s house in Chamblanc, the House of Negritude in Champagney, the House of the Abbé Grégoire in Emberménil, the Chateau de Joux, and Schoelcher’s house in Fessenheim (now reopened as "Victor Shoelcher Museum, his lifework").
