Site overview:
The Schœlcher museum was built in 1883 and houses a collection of sculptures and objects that the abolitionist Victor Schœlcher donated to the General Council of Guadeloupe. Since then, the collections have been enriched with objects related to slavery and the slave trade. Inaugurated in 1887, after the collection was completed in 1885 by some items from the Louvre Museum, the building is the first museum that opened on the island.
The Schœlcher museum is now a regional museum, and was renovated in 1998 for the events of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery.
