Site overview:
The memorial in homage to the slaves in Saint-François was inaugurated on the 27th of May 1998, for the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The memorial consists of various elements symbolising slavery and its abolition: a broken chain, a ball, a drum coming out of the middle of an open book. The following words are written on the pages of the open book: Africa, Stopover, Torture, Whip, Neg Mawon (Maroon Negro), Freedom. There are also four names: Delgrès, Solitude, Ignace and Massoteau, who fought against the restoration of slavery in 1802.
