Site overview:
The sculpture in homage to Louis Delgrès was inaugurated on the 26th of May 2001, in the Abymes (Guadeloupe). It was created by the Guadeloupian sculptor Jacky Poulier. Delgrès was affected in Guadeloupe in 1802, and took the head of a group of rebels in order to fight against Bonaparte, who wished to restore slavery (abolished since 1794 in the French colonies). On the 28th of May 1802, Delgrès preferred to die rather than surrender and live as a slave, and he blew himself and his men up as the French soldiers approached.
