Site overview:
Cap 110 is a sculptural installation in memory of slavery, erected in the Anse Caffard (place of residence of the colon Jean Caffard) during the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in 1998. This memorial was installed at the initiative of the city of Diamant (Martinique). The statues were placed on the 12th of March 1998 and inaugurated on the 22nd of May 1998. Its designer, the visual artist Laurent Valère, is from Martinique and was born in 1959. The work as a whole is composed of 15 busts forming a triangular shape (in reference to the triangular trade). Each statue represents the bust of a man leaning slightly, facing 110°, in the direction of the Gulf of Guinea. This memorial was erected in tribute to the last shipwreck experienced by the city of Diamant, which occurred during the night of the 8th to the 9th of April 1830. A clandestine slave trafficking boat struck the rocks of the Anse Caffard, killing nearly a third of those who were on board (mainly African captives).
