Site overview:
On the 24th and 25th of June 1849, during the first legislative elections in the West Indies, it is said that former emancipated slaves plundered the habitation Pirogue and spilled all the rum and sugar contained in the house inside a pond located nearby, giving it the name of "Mare au Punch" (Punch Pond). Ballot fraud seemed to have happened during the elections, leading the outraged former slaves to revolt against the members of the council.
