Overview of activities:
Established by the Decree of 5 January 2004, the CNMHE is an advisory official body whose mission is to advise the Government regarding the research, education, preservation, dissemination or transmission of the history and memories of the slave trade, slavery and their abolition.
This consultative body was created in response to the Article 4 of the Taubira Law of 2001, which requires the creation of a " committee of qualified persons, including association representatives, defending the memory of slaves", which will be "responsible for proposing, on the whole national territory, sites and actions that guarantee the sustainability of the memory of this crime through the generations."
The role of CNMHE is to advise the Government on commemorations, national and international events related to the memory of the slave trade and slavery, identification and recovery of sites of memory, history and culture, the backup and protection of sources and collections of works, raising awareness and educating about the slave trade, slavery and their abolition.
In 2006, the CNMHE obtained the establishment of the "National Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade, Slavery and their Abolition," which takes place every year on the 10th of May from then on.
