Historical overview:
Created by Léonce Lebrun in 1996, the Relais de Gorée is an association based in Lyon. In 2008, to mark the 160th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, the association created an event called “Marchez avec nous" (Walk with us) a walk through 23 towns linked to the slave trade from Bordeaux to Nantes, from the 29th of April until the 19th of May 2008. Because some municipalities did not allow the march to pass through, the project was finally interrupted.
Summary of objectives:
- To organise a walk from Bordeaux to Nantes in April and May 2008 with the participation of volunteers from all continents, as part of the 160th anniversary of the end of the slave trade in Africa, slavery in French Guiana, Martinique, La Réunion, Guadeloupe
- In memory of all the children, women and men of the Black race, victims of the slave trade, slavery and colonialism
- In order to establish an absolute duty of memory to guarantee freedom, dignity and well-being for the future generations
- To organise and support all activities or events related to enslavement and the transatlantic slave trade
- To take initiatives for the coming together of the black communities scattered by the effects of History
