The association of the Amis Réunionnais de Sarda Garriga is committed to maintaining a duty to remember Sarda Garriga, who played an important role in the abolition of slavery. Appointed regional commissioner of the Republic by Victor Shoelcher in 1848, he enforced the order of the abolition of slavery in La Réunion.
In 2014, the association contacted the municipality of Saint Denis in order to erect a monument "to honour a man who has contributed to a noble struggle for history" without success for now. According to a spokesman of the association, "the Mémorial de la Liberté (Liberty Memorial) will honour the 60,000 freed slaves as well as this man who was appointed by the Government of the Republic and who disembarked at Barachois on the 14th of October 1848 with the task to implement the abolition of slavery. Our island, grateful for the work done by Sarda Garriga , must leave to the future generations a space for reflection on the consequences, that even today, have made us free men ! "
