Historical overview:

Lanmou Ba Yo is an association for the commemoration of the abolition of slavery. Founded in Le Moule (Guadeloupe) by Jean -Luc Romana in 2002, Lanmou Ba Yo ("Love for them") organises each year the "May of the Ancestors" to pay homage to the enslaved ancestors at St. Margaret Cemetery, in partnership with the city of Le Moule.

In 1995 and 1996, the hurricanes Luis and Marilyn unearthed a slave cemetery dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth century in Sainte-Marguerite cove, in the town of Le Moule. The bodies of nearly 300 men, women and children were exhumed. Today, Lanmou Ba Yo would like this significant location to become a sanctuary.

Summary of objectives:

Lanmou Ba Yo’s objectives are as follows:

  • To manage memory-related ceremonies for our enslaved ancestors from Le Moule. These ceremonies, held each year, are called "May of the Ancestors."
  • To recover and restore various places of memory, which are evidences of our affiliation with our enslaved ancestors. (Sainte Marguerite Cemetery, Mills, Habitations…)
  • To work towards the creation groups to talk and share our suffering, which is the first step towards the establishment of a genealogy work (liannaj) on our enslaved ancestors.
