Historical overview:

The Komité Elie is composed of several associations (Rasine Kaf, Art Sénik, Lantant Pikan and consort) and was created in 1999 (registered in 2008). The association is named after Elijah, the Creole slave leader of the revolt of Saint-Leu, which took place from the 5th to the 11th of November 1811, 37 years before the abolition of slavery. The Komité Eli is a cultural association that advocates the knowledge of the history of the people of La Réunion and the protection of its historical memory. The association is presided by Yvrin Rosalie, believes that the abolition wouldn’t have happened if it were not for the slave revolt in Saint-Leu.

Still active, the association organized a press conference in 2015 to present the commemoration of the Journée Internationale de la Traite négrière (International Day of the Slave Trade) in La Réunion, celebrated worldwide for several years at the request of UNESCO.
