Scope:
Regional/local: A smaller organization or association focused on local/regional activities.
Historical overview:
The association Kan Villèle was founded in September 1993 by young people from the neighbourhood of Villèle (Saint Paul, La Réunion). Ever since its creation, the association has worked to celebrate the anniversary of the abolition of slavery, both in the village and at the site of the former home of the Desbassayns family. In order to do so, the association sets up various cultural events and exhibitions on the history of the region with different themes each year: habitat, genealogy, working conditions, water, indentured servitude, etc.
Summary of objectives:
The objectives of the association Kan Villèle are as follows:
- To organize cultural and sportive activities and enhance local heritage
- To launch a discussion on the evolution of the neighbourhood, its future prospects and the social inclusion of young people from Villèle
