Summary of objectives:
The objectives of the Comité Mémoire et Citoyenneté d’Outre-Mer are as follows:
- To give more breadth to the remembrance ceremonies commemorating the slave trade, enslavement and its abolition in the territory of the agglomeration of Val d'Orge
- To highlight the realities of the deportation and enslavement of millions of men and women
- To make these days of remembrance a space for exchange and sharing, recognised by all
- To value the memorial the 'Colonnes de la Liberté' ('Columns of Liberty' in Place Toussaint Louverture, located in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois
- To share and enforce: 10th May as a day for commemorating the slave trade, slavery and their abolitions; 21st May 2001 law recognising the slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity; the decree relating to 23rd May 2008 as a day of remembrance for the victims of colonial slavery
- To fight against racism and xenophobia through a better understanding and appreciation of other cultures
- To create a centre for resources and historical research.
