According to their website, the Collectif PACA pour la Mémoire de l'Esclavage is an association created in March 2008 in Marseille. It gathers more than thirty associations wishing to communicate information about the history of the slave trade, slavery and their abolitions, and works in line with the Taubira Law enacted in 2001, and the Comité pour la Mémoire de l'Esclavage (Committee for the Commemoration of Slavery) established in 2004. It brings together associations of people living in Marseille and the surrounding area as well as from Africa, the Caribbean and La Réunion.
The CPPME priorities the transmission of memory through conferences and debates, film screenings and exhibitions, etc. This educational program, broadcasted throughout the year, aims to involve everyone, in particular school groups.
The objectives of the Collectif PACA pour la Mémoire de l'Esclavage are as follows:
- To organise the national day of commemoration of the abolition of slavery on 10th May in Marseille
- To contribute to memory work regarding the slave trade, slavery and their abolitions.
