Each year the Collectif des Associations Devoir de Mémoire organises a cultural and festive event commemorating the abolition of slavery in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine). On 18th May 2015, the commemoration was attended by Mrs. George Pau-Langevin, Minister of the Overseas Departments, the Mayor of Nanterre Patrick Jarry, and elected officials of the city of Nanterre. After laying wreaths and speeches, the event included among other items a conference ('The history of music read through the history of slavery, or the transformation of the Calabash across time and across oceans'), Gospel songs, a call to drums, and a Creole ball with the group D TWA NOT.
The objectives of the Collectif des Associations Devoir de Mémoire are as follows:
- To raise awareness about slavery, which concerns not only the past but also the present and the future
- To recall the current consequences caused by the slave trade and their connectedness to today
- To understand the various forms of slavery that continue to develop
- To foster equitable dialogue between people
- To remember the importance of respecting universal human rights
- To fight against all forms of slavery
- To educate the public and develop a sense of citizenship.
