The city of Houilles is strongly connected with the figure of Victor Schœlcher, who rented a house in Houilles from 1876 and died there on 25th December 1893. In 1904, the city of Houilles erected a bust of Schœlcher, which was destroyed during World War II. The bust was rebuilt in 1949 and inaugurated in the presence of Gaston Monnerville, president of the Council of the Republic. The association of the Amis de la Maison de Victor Schœlcher de Houilles aims to make the home of Victor Schœlcher in Houilles more visible and works to raise awareness of Schœlcher’s life and actions.
The objectives of the Amis de la Maison de Victor Schœlcher de Houilles are as follows:
- To promote the work of Victor Schoelcher, in particular his struggle to abolish slavery for the second time
- To showcase the last residence of this great politician
- To honour the victims by showing the consequences of the slave trade.
