On 2nd December 2006, in an interview with Nice's regional newspaper, Var-Matin, Pascal Sevran, a TV presenter for France 2, responded to questions relating to a controversial phrase that appeared in his latest book Le Privilège des Jonquilles in which he had written 'Black dicks are responsible for the famine in Africa' ('La bite des Noirs est responsable de la famine en Afrique'). In response, Sevran stated 'So what? It's the truth. African is bursting with children who are born there without their parents being able to feed them. I'm not the only one saying it. If people sitting nice and cozy in their convictions can't handle hearing that, then screw them! Yep, we ought to sterilize half the planet!' In response, the association CollectifDom wrote an open letter to Jacques Chirac criticizing Sevran's incitement to racial hatred and his endorsement of eugenics. The letter notes that this was not an isolated case among high-profile persons, citing the cases of Alain Finkielkraut and Georges Frêche. It calls for Sevran to be removed from TV and for his légion d'honneur to be revoked. CollectifDom also lodged a formal complaint against Sevran's words. On 11th December 2006, the Director General of France 2, Philippe Baudillon, took the matter into his own hands by issuing a formal letter to Sevran in which he distanced France 2 from any responsibility, while warning the presenter not to do it again and to be more mindful of his ethical responsibilities.
