Site overview:
On the 28th of February 2006, to mark the bicentenary of the death of General Dumas, the association of the Friends of General Alexandre Dumas (Les amis du Général Alexandre Dumas) installed a plaque in Villers-Cotterêts, on the front of the house where the General Dumas died.
The plaque was then designated as a site of memory for the annual commemoration of the 10th of May, national day for the commemoration of slavery.
This commemoration has been celebrated every year from the 10th of May 2006 in front of the plaque located in 41, Rue du général-Mangin, in presence of the prefect and the municipality.
Although this tradition had been maintained for 8 consecutive years, the new FN (National Front) elected mayor in 2014, Franck Briffaut, announced that he wanted to break with this tradition.
In response, the association of the Friends of General Dumas announced in a statement on the 24th of April 2014 that it would take over the organisation of the commemoration from then on.
