A metal sculpture representing an open slave yoke is located on the Place du Débarcadère in St. Paul, where slave ships landed. This monument, created by the artist Alain Louis Padeau, was erected in December 1998 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in La Réunion. The iron collar is surrounded by six rectangular blocks on which are engraved the names of slaves.
