On the island of Marie-Galante, the plaine des Galets had ideal conditions for the production of indigo, thanks to a climate that favoured the growth of indigo plants. The workforce was mainly composed of indentured servants, which were quickly replaced by slaves. The remains of the different tanks used for the extraction of indigo are still present on the site.
