The statue of the Nègre marron (Neg’ Marron) (Maroon Negro) is located at the entrance of the village of Diamant (Martinique). It was erected in memory of the Maroons, the rebel slaves who escaped and took refuge in the mountains to live there and perpetuate their traditions. The statue was inaugurated on the 22nd of May 1998, on the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, and was created by the Martinican artist Hector Charpentier. It represents a runaway slave breaking his chains.
