Historical overview: 

Founded in 2006, the association Passerelle Noire is based in Nantes. It organises 'La Marche des esclaves' ('The Slave March'), which is held every year on 9th May in Nantes on the eve of the National Day for Remembering Slavery, the Slave trade and the Abolitions (10th May). This march forms part of the association's memory work and is organised to highlight the abomination of the slave trade.

Following 'The Slave March' on 9th May 2007, Passerelle Noire produced a film called 'Un monde qui marche' ('A World in Motion') under the direction of Marcel Zang, Peter Lema and Andre Joseph Gélie.

Summary of objectives: 

The objectives of Passerelle Noire are as follows:

  • To promote black culture and protect its memory through various forms of expression and cultural actions
  • As far as possible, to support projects working on similar approaches
  • To organise 'The Slave March' on an annual basis.
